The Big Q Timex Quartz represents a pivotal moment in watchmaking history during the mid-1970s, when quartz technology was still in its exciting early stages. Released around 1976, this model showcases Timex’s achievement in making reliable quartz technology accessible to a broader market, at a time when quartz watches were seen as futuristic and highly desirable.
Unusually for quartz watches this watch has a sweep second, because it is a quartz controlled balance wheel. You also have a quick set date. One unusual feature is the faceted crystal, it is acrylic and the facets are on the inside, making it easier to polish. This example also has a signed Timex bracelet which is a good length and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. We will fit a new battery and battery case seal before sending this out to the next lucky owner.
Unlike standard quartz movements, the Big Q is powered by the Timex Caliber 63, a quartz-controlled balance wheel movement that offers the smooth sweep of a mechanical second hand alongside quartz accuracy. This hybrid design was a technical marvel for its era and remains a testament to Timex’s innovation. The watch also features a quick-set date function, adding practicality to its distinctive style.
Today, vintage examples like this are rare finds, particularly in such well-preserved condition with original parts including the bracelet. The Big Q Timex remains a beloved piece among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate its historic significance and bold 70s styling.
